Last week, two communities at SF State came together to work to make a difference. Queer Alliance and City Cru joined with one another to raise funds on campus for the OSF. Through two days of tabling in Malcom X plaza, these groups were able to raise $285, enough to cover one semester of tuition for one student in Honduras.

Everyone contributed something – whether it was selling bracelets made by QA students, Sweetheart boxes on Valentine’s Day, homemade bookmarks or just their time by spending hours in between classes working at the table – to make a difference in the life of an orphan.

We can all learn something from these two groups as they put differences aside, formed friendships, and took up a worthy cause.

What will you do?

At the beginning of this year, students from City Cru at SF State traveled down to San Diego for a conference alongside other students from campuses all over California, Arizona, and Hawaii. The 800 college students in attendance gave $4000 dollars out of their own pockets to benefit the Orphan Scholarship Fund. On top of that, SF State student Christine Longoria sold over $750 worth of her ceramic necklaces to benefit the OSF. In less than a week, college students combined their talents and resources to raise almost $5000 to empower orphans to become future leaders in their communities by way of education.

I was born in 1988 to Victor and Maria Elena Rodas. I am the youngest of 5 children and when I was 5 yrs. old my father past away leaving my family with nothing. My mother and sisters had to work hard in order to provide for us. I admire and love my mother for all the work and sacrifice she paid to care for her children. After many years of hunger, no place to live we were given refuge in Plan Escalon where my fours sisters and I graduated. Three of my sisters are now married and I am living with my mother in La Entrada and now work in Tree of Life Ministries as an English and Music teacher. I graduated in 2000.

God has always had His hand on us and I don’t know how to explain but I feel in my heart that God had promised my dad that he would always take care of us. We have had many challenges but God has always showed us His Love. God has always had people in my life that has been a part of the development of my character.
