What is the Orphan Scholarship Fund?

The image that comes to mind for most people when they hear the word orphan is a picture of defenseless children in third world countries with no one to care for them. While this picture represents one tragic reality of the orphan crisis, other aspects go widely unnoticed.

Every year, 14,050,000 orphans age out of the system set in place in their countries to care for them. They are sent out into the world still without a permanent family and are forced to make their way alone. For many, this means a life destined for crime, drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, and extreme poverty.

Here in the U.S., most students don’t even question whether or not they will attend college. This largely is made possible by the abundance of college scholarships and financial aid available to students of every background along with a family member or mentor to help them navigate their options.

What if a group of college students in the US decided to do something about the orphan crisis? Specifically, what if they decided to make a difference for their own peer group? That’s exactly what the Orphan Scholarship Fund is.

The OSF is a movement of college students – from service clubs, ministries and organizations, to fraternities and sororities – empowering college age orphans to become future leaders in their communities by providing them with education.

In partnership with Lifesong for Orphans Honduras, the OSF is sending these orphaned students to school in their home country. Students are using their skills, talents, and resources to shed light on the plight of orphans while raising funds to make a difference. From homemade necklaces to Dodgeball Tournaments, students are using creative avenues to make a difference in the life of an orphan.

Now it’s your turn. How can you join the movement?
